Debs Foundation

In 1962, friends and admirers of Debs, organized
the Debs Foundation, which bought his home and began to use
it as a headquarters. It is located on the campus of Indiana
State University and graduate students serve as curators and
guides. A pleasant garden is attached to the home, which is
maintained by the foundation. The walls contain bronze plaques
erected to the memory of past union leaders.
The business of the foundation is conducted
by an elected board meeting twice annually. A regular feature
of the Fall meeting is the annual Award Banquet when a person
"in the image of Debs" is presented with a plaque.
In 1990 the Debs home celebrated its 100th
Anniversary.
The Foundation closes all sessions with the
Creed of Eugene Victor Debs:
"While there is a lower class, I am
in it; while there is a criminal element; I am of it; while
there is a soul in prison, I am not free."
