The Steel Wheel...An Introduction

In the tradition of the work of Eugene V. Debs and Peter H. Clark, the Steel Wheel is intended as an organizing tool for railroad workers. We will provide information to help workers and their unions fight back against the big corporations' offensive against us.

With this as our purpose, we offer these principles to guide us in our work:

• The Steel Wheel supports a more democratic political system and an end to the domination of the government by big business.
• The Steel Wheel supports a more democratic economic system where full employment at Union wages, education, adequate housing and health care are seen as human rights for everyone, not just the privileged few.
• The Steel Wheel is for full equality for everyone and an end to discrimination against minorities, women and workers. We must strongly oppose racist and sexist ideas and practices which are a poison that always serves to divide us.
• The Steel Wheel is for freedom of expression. We welcome comments by anyone who is committed to railroad workers' efforts to organize and build their Unions. Anti-communists or anti-socialist appeals must be rejected because this would exclude many people who have made important contributions to the labor movement.
• The Steel Wheel is for the co-operation of all railroad unions against our common enemy and their eventual merger into a single fighting democratic Union.
• The Steel Wheel is for the close co-operation of all transportation workers joining together to fight for a better life for all working people.
